When livestock is crowded together, disease can occur. The closer they crowd together the greater the risk of disease. The greatest threat to the well being of any creature comes from other creatures of the same species. Disease can be passed directly between the same species, human to human or animal to animal, or through indirect vectors such as contaminated surfaces, feed or water, vermin, insects or other creatures.

Biosecurity, in other words excluding disease organisms from the creature's environment, is the most effective form of protection.
